Homebake 2013: Cooked

The trembling mole-man that is the degenerating Australian music festival scene took another hit today with the cancellation of the 18th annual Homebake festival.

In attempts to change the image of the event for the discerning boutique crowd, the festival had been engineered to be a three-night package taking place on the steps of the Opera House as opposed to the tried and tested one-day bender in Sydney’s Domain format.

With suspicions being that this re-thinking of the event was it’s kiss of death, performers such as Bernard Fanning, Birds of Tokyo, Paul Kelly and The Presets along with fans whom have already invested in tickets are being left high and dry.

A statement from the promoters of the event also echoed the negative response to appropriate the event to be totes bourgeois;

‘Over the last four weeks since the initial launch of Homebake 2013, it has become apparent based on the feedback from social media sites and the box office that traditional Homebake fans have rejected this change in format from one day to three nights and the change in venue.’

Crying into their wristbands and letting the event go with ‘heavy hearts’, this leaves us to wonder what will be the next initiative of festival promoters to pump life back into a struggling industry.

With a flaming hot Australian summer ahead and punters on the backburner, we’ll have to wait and see.
