Future Classic Talk Building Label Success, Managing Flume

Below, you’ll find episode #1 in Ableton Liveschool‘s INPUT video series, in which Nathan McLay opens up on the inner workings of his Future Classic label, how to survive and succeed in the music industry and his advice to unsigned artists in landing a record deal. We want to thank Nathan for being so candid with us at the event and for allowing us to share this with you all.

Over the last year, we (Ableton Liveschool) have been running a quarterly event called INPUT. It’s an intimate conference that gives budding producers, music makers and anyone looking to get involved in the music industry a chance to receive gain production techniques and industry advice from Australia’s most forward thinking music producers and music industry leaders. It all happens via in-depth presentations, as well as crowd involved Q&As.

Our recent event’s featured Tim Shiel (Gotye) and Nathan McLay (Future Classic label boss, Flume‘s manager, etc). We realised it would be an unforgivable crime against humanity not to share the knowledge that they presented, so we’ve taken it upon ourselves to begin releasing video episodes of some of the talks.

Our next INPUT event on November 9th at FBi social and features RÜFÜS, What So Not, Astral People (Vic Edirisinghe) and Anthony Garvin (Studios 301). Have a sneak peek into RÜFÜS‘ presentation in our article here on Stoney Roads, which uncovers some of the aspects of their on-stage Ableton Live set. For more details and tickets, head on over to the event page at Resident Advisor.

Check back next fortnight (and subscribe to our youtube channel) – next up we’re going to share Tim Shiel’s talk with you, in which he takes everyone through how he and Gotye (Wally De Backer) took the Grammy award winning album ‘Making Mirrors’ and (using Ableton Live) turned it into a live show that they then performed the world over.

Our next INPUT event is being held on November 9th at FBi Social, with a lineup including RÜFÜS, Whats So Not, Vic Edirisinge from Astral People and Anthony Garvin. More info and tickets available over at Resident Advisor.
