Fashion Based On Thrift Fashion: M.I.A/Versace Collaboration Gets Meta

If you’re a bad (and relatively wealthy) girl and you want to express how you ‘do it well’ through dress, M.I.A and Versace have conceived a line for you!

Set for release in stores on October 16, the 19-piece collection is a collaboration between the fashion house and artist, set to be the running feature of their ever-so-slightly more affordable line Versus.

It’s the concept of the label that’s the kicker. The idea brought to the floor by M.I.A was the idea of copying cheap Versace counterfeits to capture the ‘energy of the street’ – naturally what everyone is trying to achieve when they buy designer brand clothes.

In conversation with Women’s Wear Daily, M.I.A said this of the upcoming line,

“The theme of counterfeits, of those that produce and sell them has always been part of the culture of M.I.A., when I was contacted by Versace, it seemed a great idea to invert the circle. Versace’s designs have always been copied, now it’s Versace that copies the copies, so those that copy must copy the copies. So this will continue.”

Apart from anything, M.I.A. definitely takes out the award for most ‘copies’ in a sentence.

Irony aside, we have to say that the clothes look pretty cool. A mesh of 80s patterns and asymmetrical design, perfectly paired with the artist’s trademark chunky gold chains and wayward attitudes. We also feel like it’s good ‘walking-down-the-street-with-your-boom-box’ wear.

According to Donatella Versace, the collection straddles the music/fashion world, stating;

“The collection represents all that I love of the new Versus Versace: it’s fast, it’s noisy, it’s brazen and it blends the world of music with that of fashion.”
