Community based radio station FBi celebrated their 10th birthday in style with 8,000 Sydney friends and music lovers as they converged on the historically restored Eveleigh Rail Yards, now known by it’s modern name, Carriageworks. Sitting snugly between Redfern and Macdonaldtown station, the scene was set for one hell of a celebration that saw The Presets, Hermitude, Seekae, Sampology and many more slam out their own brand of dance and electronica.
Like a large Australian musical reunion, FBi extraordinarily managed to pull together a swathe of bands, DJs and electronic artists who played a role in the growth of the humble station turning it into a beacon of creativity for NSW. It was the valedictorian’s of the night aka The Presets who delivered an unforgettable performance dishing out old and new to end the evening on a high.
With the trains swooshing past in the backdrop of a packed of the temporarily constructed outdoor stage, it felt special to have been apart of something that each and everyone of could have called their own.
It wasn’t just the prospects of a festival being a five minute walk from my house that got me excited (how often in a lifetime does that happen!), it was the justification behind being at something that required a lot of community backing from every stake holder to ensure a successful celebration.
So what did we learn from FBi’s 10th Birthday?
– Carriageworks could possibly be the coolest place to hold a festival/party in Sydney
– The Presets are still incredible live no matter how many times you’ve seen them play
– You can hold a festival without having shirtless “bro’s”
– Sydney’s music and creative arts scene is strong and united
– Seekae played some fresh material from a new album that will dropping on Future Classic
– Sampology stimulation show actually stimulated a couple into having sex at his show
Hey FBi, can we do this again next year?
