Video: Roland Tings – Tomita’s Basement

Roland Tings’ new single ‘Tomita’s Basement’ is out today on Club Mod with a trippy video clip to go with it. The single, with b-side ‘Cagean Sea’, and remixes by Jeremy Greenspan (Junior Boys) and Maxmillion Dunbar (Future Times), is now available digitally and on vinyl.

Tings has been tinkering at a sound in his head for the last few years, trying to paint a picture of a time and place he’s only ever experienced second, third or fourth hand. By combining the tones, colours and feelings that he imagined thrived in the people and places at the origins of house and techno and applying them to his own ideas of production and composition, the resultant brew is one that echoes of the classics with a vibrant, modern energy. On a local level it was the influence of a select clutch of specialist Melbourne music institutions that continued to motivate Tings to evolve and explore. Radio shows such as Noise In My Head and Strange Holiday on local community station 3RRR, club nights such as Bamboo Musik – these local touchstones sent Tings travelling through alternate musical realities. These are realities where things can not only be weird, raw, emotive, and functional as dance music, but they can thrive in their own rhythmic idiosyncrasies.

Tomita’s Basement was made quite literally in Tomita’s Berlin-based basement – a propulsive modular synth workout from far below the surface that in a roundabout way pays tribute to Japanese composer Yann Tomita, with Junior Boys’ Jeremy Greenspan remix plunging even further into the abyss. The flipside comes up for air; a more blissful affair of azure dancefloor melancholy, and Future Times’ Maxmillion Dunbar turns it into a percussive, stutterfunk workout.

Through these transmissions, Tings gravitated towards a certain ideal of people doing things wrong and rough but with an emphasis on channelling an energy and a spirit. And so here is his latest outpouring, following on from a 12” on 100% Silk in the form of two lucid, nebulous jack trax, each with it’s own deft remix.

Available on 12” vinyl and digitally on August 12 in the UK, EU and Australia, and on August 13 in the US. Get it HERE and watch the video below!
