Ableton Liveschool: Free Drum Sample Pack – Vermona DRM1 x Fairchild Compressor

We’re back with another guest post and this time it’s some more amazing free drums!

Following on from the Roland 808 pack we posted a couple of weeks back, here’s another batch of boutique drum samples we’ve been working on. This time around Adam Maggs and Anthony Garvin have taken the Vermona DRM1 MKII Drum Synthesizer and run it through not only the Fairchild 670 Compressor (which we used last time on the Roland 808), but also through a plethora of other super deluxe equipment at Studios 301.

The Drums

The drum source this time was a Vermona DRM1 MKII (pictured above), which is a wholly analog drum synthesizer (it synthesizes drum sounds rather than playing back samples) capable of extensive analog tweak-ability via the 72 dedicated function knobs featured on it’s front panel. Built in Germany throughout the early 2000s, it has become legendary for it’s snappy, crispy and punchy analog drum goodness and while it is totally capable of replicating the sounds of the 808 or 909, the Vermona also excels at weird and very unique synthesized drums and percussion.

The Recording

As unbelievable as it sounds, with all the gear on hand at Studios 301, these samples actually ended up being run through close to half a million dollars of equipment. We again utilised the amazing Fairchild 670 Compressor, but also went to town with all the other outboard gear at the studio, running the drums through different combinations of the Neve 2254 Compressor, Focusrite Red Compressor, SSL9000k Console, API 512c Preamps and the Pultec EQ1PA Equalizer. For all the audio nerds out there, in the download you’ll find detailed descriptions of the customised signal path’s we created for each individual drum sound.

The Drum Rack

The drums are again presented in the form of a ready to use Ableton Live Drum Rack, put together by Ableton Certified Trainer Adam Maggs, with the standalone samples also easily accessible. The drum rack is nice and simple to use on the surface, but a lot of thought has gone into the sound design and macro controls that have been implemented. Each drum type has eight macro controls which have been colour coded for easy use: the sample selector is white, effect controls are pink and common controls that shape both the effected and un-effected versions are blue. The rack is designed to give you control over the most essential sound shaping features, which makes for a very ‘musical’ experience – even when tweaking some of the extreme / noisey samples.

Without further ado, here’s the download! If you have any requests, feedback or tunes that you’ve made with our samples then hit us up about it on facebook, we’re all ears.

Adam Maggs and Anthony Garvin both teach at Liveschool’s Mixing and Mastering course, in which students learn world class mixing techniques and secrets from an all-star line up of engineers and artists, resulting in students achieving clarity and a professional sound in their own mixes. This course held across both the Liveschool and Studios 301 premises (where we recorded the drum samples above!). Next intake: check here.
