From Calgary, Canada, Modern Math Recordings delves deeply into the texture of modern bass music, supporting home grown artists on a global stage. Michael Red’s Modern Math release, 002, calls out like a distant sonar blip through an ocean, with hints of garage, house and dub flirting at the edges of all four tracks, coalescing into a smoky mosaic of vocal snippets and textural clicks for the label’s second release.

‘No Smoke No Fire’ pulls the listener slowly and methodically through a thoughtful jungle of dancing hi hats and kicks, rarely landing where expected. ‘Stir’ challenges the ear at all angles and denies typical electronic musical structure and expectation at every turn with rolling percussion and choppy, antithetical vocal chunks. The ethereal ‘Sideways’ balances a growling, rolling, low end with huge, watery splashes of reverb and texture, pushed relentlessly onward by a waving snare line. The set piece is ‘Fade To Light’; a truly off kilter number which pokes the bouncy, irregular beat through with bits and bobs of bass and claps. MM002 shifts and transforms at will to defy the typical structure and norms of dance music and push musical boundaries yet further in an era of constant innovation.
