Beastie Boys Mike D To Produce, Cites TNGHT Influence

Legendary Beastie Boys member Mike D is set to produce music again while citing trap influences.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone Mike D, one-third of the 90’s Hip Hop crew Beastie Boys shared that he was “excited about making new stuff again” after fashion house Kenzo asked him to curate their 2014 Spring/Summer Collection show that included guests Spike Jones and Yasiin Bey (formally Mos Def).

For the show, he surprisingly drew on inspiration from trap sensations TNGHT and Chief Keef, while combining his own personal punk roots.

“I’ve been listening to a lot of the trap music the kids like these days. I’ve gotten really into it. Shit is tight! It’s interesting – it’s the first time in a while I feel like hip-hop has returned to its raw, stripped-down, drum-machine roots. At the same time, it’s not retro, and works in a club setting.”

It didn’t stop there though with Diamond Mike playing the show’s afterparty with what turned out to be a mostly trap affair that wasn’t expected by the mostly A grade celebrities in attendance.

‘What’s wrong with him? The guy has lost his mind!’ My most successful mix of the night was TNGHT’s ‘Acrylics’ into A-Trak’s new song, ‘Landline 2.0.’ The two biggest songs of the night, though, were Diplo’s ‘Express Yourself’ and Le Tigre’s ‘Decepticon.’ People went nuts! It was a woo-banga of a time!”

Beastie Boys Mike D mixing TNGHT into A-Trak? We’re liking it. TNGHT will also be playing this years Listen Out parties alongside John Talabot and Azealia Banks.
