Champion – Prince Jammy / Hydra Island EP [Formula]

Better late than never, right? Don’t know how I missed this one! Released April 27 on his own newly-founded Formula imprint comes Champions newest release, a weighty 2-track 12” that unites typical funky rhythms with more contemporary, thick-edged bass styles.

It’s only been a little under two years since Champion‘s debut funky foray into the world of electronic music was harnessed by Terror Danjah’s Hardrive imprint, but given the rapidity of his success since, you’d almost be hard pushed to believe it. Starting his sets with the A-side Hydra Island for over a year now, it nearly lives up to 2011’s dancefloor-shaking Lighter EP and last year’s grime smash aptly titled Crystal Meth. Definitely the most funky out of the two – as always the bassline is key; a lumbering beast that easily matches the sub-pressure of a vintage Loefah production.

On the flip, Prince Jammy is a much tougher cut, flying the flag for the more aggressive strains of UK funky. It sees sees Champion in familiar territory – quick-fast, sharp drums and claps anchoring the percussion and his signature guttural bassline making this one another addition to the already glowing catalogue of buy-on-sight releases.

Resident Advisor said this: “It’s fair to say that neither of these tracks possess the shock-out factor of his finest, and they don’t stray beyond the producer’s comfort zone.” I’m not too sure of this – these two tracks are beastly. Anyone warming to the sounds of UK funky / the more brutal garage sounds, get at this now.
