Avicii feat. Aloe Blacc – Wake Me Up [PRMD]

Officially released today on PRMD, Avicii’s country-inspired, soon-to-be-worldwide-hit Wake Me Up featuring Aloe Blacc has just hit the airwaves. Originally premiered during his set at Ultra Miami this year, the collab with the vocalist of I Need A Dollar is different to his previous pieces, but will still no doubt further indent progressive house music into the mainstream everyday listening. It was ‘officially’ aired for the first time 3 days ago via Pete Tong on BBC Radio 1 – which can be heard below – and it’s good; I like it.

It’s definitely not as ‘hands in the air’ as his previous releases – and the majority of commercial dance music at the moment for that matter – but I think that’s why people will warm to it. While not uniquely drifting away from today’s Beatport Top 10 unoriginality, the Swede is clearly turning from his previous production outlook. He’s incorporated classical guitars, non-emotional lyrics and a really nice, progressive break. It’s not turbo like heaps of other stuff going around at the moment; it’s a legitimately lovely song.

Nonetheless though, I’m still going to mentally prepare to fend off commercial radio stations and 12 year old girls when they play it in 8-10 months time and call it a fresh hit.
