Jagwar Ma – Did You Have To (Float On) – The Time and Space Machine Dub

I have not felt this strongly about a song in a while.

Jagwar Ma are a poor man’s Tame Impala. Which is a lot like calling Kobe Jordan a poor man’s Michael Jordan or Ronaldo a poor man’s Messi. They’re just really, really nice. Translation: they’reYes, the Syndey-based trio of Jono Ma (a sneaky sneaky great remixer), Gabriel Winterfield, Jack Freeman are no strangers to the Australian music scene, but there about to burst onto the worldwide scene.

Their debut album, “Howlin” is available for pre-order and if this Balearic dub is any indication…hold onto your Vegemite kids. With some stunning singles to their name (“Come Save Me” is noteworthy), there’s little doubt Jagwar Ma are on a clear path to life in the fast lane. This description topples any I can provide:

Imagine the Chemical Brothers produced by Phil Spector at the Hacienda featuring the dead members of The Beatles and a splash of Tame Impala and you might get some idea of the sound and vision these two have. Chunky breaks, hand claps, soaring melodies, mammoth hooks – it’s all here, wrapped up in fused and fuzzy psychedelia. A killer debut and sure to set every field, festival and block party alight from here on in.

Yes indeed. I’ve been listening to this Balearic dub for 30 minutes in a row (three times), and it carries this simple message and emotion that every thing is going to be alright–the feeling one looks for within this kind of music.

In these dog days of watered down beats and recycled sounds, Jagwar Ma is simply a jump in a cold pool on a hot summer day: This Is Real Music.

ps It’s very slight, but there are some similarities syncopation wise between Balearic music and trap. Rhythmically speaking…
