Dot Rotten – Voices In My Head

YEAH! Last week Dot Rotten’s new album Voices in my Head was finally released thanks to Universal Records. Before the entire album was released, four singles had been premièred for over a year; firstly Keep It On a Low, second Are You Not Entertained?, thirdly Overload and lastly my personal favourite from the hip-hop side of the album, Karmageddon.

The album is strongly hip-hop orientated; but in classic Dot Rotten style features his signature grime, beautifully mixed in between the hearty and soulful ‘hop of most tracks. This is seriously seen in the first release of the album and his début single, Keep It On a Low. Track 5 of the album Overload, featuring TMS, is another favourite of mine, pulling strongly on the sampled mainstream, unmistakable sounds of Children by Robert Miles.  Typically grimey British rap comes pouring out of Pressure and I Can See in true Dot Rotten groove, while Gates of Heaven, Free and Picture calls more for a soulful hip-hop tone. Karmageddon has received remix treatment by TC and Cadenza, with Are You Not Entertained? has been given a Mr. Enigma work-over.

All in all this is a really fucking good album; I’m a bit disappointed that there’s only 12 tracks given that he just released a 21-track mixtape, but it’s well worth the buy if you’re a Dot Rotten fan or willing to become one. This album reinforces why I think Dot is one of the best rappers in the game: a perfect mix of grime and hip-hop. LOVE.
