Vanilla Ace – Musicology EP

Vanilla Ace

It’s always exciting to see a new artist break out in a big way with one hit track after another, and Vanilla Ace has been doing just that in 2013. His new Musicology EP was just released earlier this week on OFF Recordings, featuring two very different, equally brilliant productions. The title track “Musicology” is fun and dancey, with funky, soulful vocal elements that come to life in the retro music video (below) that features old school dancefloor shredding. It’s a true tribute to his love for house music.

With “Bring It Back,” Ace takes a killer sample from Moby’s iconic “" target="_blank">Natural Blues” and totally flips it inside out. The track is soft and sensual, and another example of his masterful use of vocals and basslines. This second track is arguably the more impressive of the two, but it’s an amazing EP overall.

The young artist has been DJing since he was 17 or 18 in London clubs, but sometime during the end of 2011 he was incredibly inspired by deep house and nu disco, and from that creative spark his Vanilla Ace project was born.

He’s released music on Moda and Southern Fried, but getting signed to Mark Knight’s Toolroom Records was the real game-changer. His first track off Toolroom was “" target="_blank">Layer Cake” on last year’s Miami compilation, which eventually made its way to Ministry of Sound’s deep house compilation as well. A few months ago he also dropped “Hypnotic” on Toolroom, which he describes as a “peak jam.”

In a recent interview with Tone Deep, he offered sage advice to upcoming artists: “Be original and stick to what you believe in.”
