Review: Client Liaison + Namine + Romy

Monte Morgan and Harvey Miller are Client Liaison. They come with an air of mysteriousness that is hard to achieve in this day and age – even Daft Punk got unmasked at some point. Having one song on the internet gets tiring after a while, after a month, even after a week. How long do you expect fans to sit there and press repeat on the one track? I guess this is why the gig got sold out so quickly.

I arrived quite early to check out the supporting lineup. Naminé, whom I’ve seen a bunch of times now was great. If you ever want to see a cute guy dressed in enough tie dye and Nike to make a Tumblr gal swoon with reblog envy this is for you. I only caught half the set because I made the decision to wear a fur coat. Here’s a tip, if you go to The Toff and wear a fur coat (I understand, fashion etc) remove it before you make your way up the 49093 steps. I was sweaty and overwhelmed but hearing Celestia hit me with a coolness that instantly relieved my fashion induced heat stroke.

I chain smoked some menthols before Romy came on. Hey, A Current Affair or Today Tonight or whoever does constant stories on hangover specials… I found one that works. Romy’s energy on stage, her upbeat lyrics and general presence instantly had me moving my feet. It could have been that or simply the need to fit in with the group of upbeat Romy fans front of stage who were dancing like they were made for a Video Hits special. They looked good. I wanted to look good too.

I was getting pretty impatient waiting for Client Liasison at this point. I really wanted a pizza and had run out of cigarettes because of my chain smoking habit. I popped downstairs with Naminé and Erica to watch her smoke a joint and watch him eat pizza. Nothing at this point was going to resurrect my downtrodden soul except for Client Liaison. Even in the moments leading up to their performance I was increasing in fandom.

Leaving was a bad idea. I mean, I didn’t get pizza OR any of that joint and upon returning the crowd that had sold out tickets all appeared to have arrived. Oxygen was scarce but excitement was dripping in the form of sweat from every patron’s face. It was a good looking crowd too.

If you thought Swanston St was bombarded with Australiana, you haven’t seen nothing. What I loved most about Client Liaison was the outfit change. I think the outfit change is a performance art that goes overlooked often. My eyes want to be tantalised as much as my ears do guys, do something about it. The End of The Earth was greeted with enthusiasm but the warm looks of familiarity that were being exchanged for songs people knew only from memory and not by name was no doubt novel and something I think everyone should experience at some point. Erica left after she heard the song she was waiting for all night which she recognised as “that song I heard while on acid in my tent at Golden Plains”. When their set finally came to an end everyone seemed satisfied and buzzing with joy that we all knew couldn’t be relived on the internet. That’s food for thought.
