Nicolas Jaar: “I Am Trying To Make Music For Everyone”

Nicolas Jaar and his cerebral act are on a (perpetual) world tour, and the latest stop is Japan. The fact that the 23-year-old even performs in these countries speaks volumes. Jaar’s music, strange (and glorious) as it might be, has universal reach, impact, and acceptance. Of course, the best music is often without a language, and Nicolas Jaar is living proof of this.

The Japanese Times caught up with Jaar, and he delivered some choice, deep quotes regarding music and his creative process that come as no surprise–but will of course blow your mind–especially if you’re an aspiring artist or just a die-hard fan music fan.

“For me, it would be boring if you could say to me ‘you make this type of music’. I would feel like I’m not doing my job. My job is to, and this is my own goal, without an audience in mind, try to make a type of music that hasn’t been heard before. Obviously, that is the hardest thing in the world. I’m not saying I do that, I don’t think that I do. But I try really hard to do that.

“Making music for everyone is what we are all trying to do. I am not making music for a specific type of person; I am trying to make music for everyone. Now, I happen to fail at that and that is the difference. I am not trying to make difficult music. I am not trying to make music that is uncommon. I am trying to make music everyone can enjoy.”

You can–and should–read the full interview here. People like Nicolas Jaar don’t come around that often. Let’s enjoy it as long as we can.

Little known fact, Nicolas Jaar only ever creates one mixtape a year. While you digest that, listen to his beautifully constructed album ‘Space Is Noise’ in full below.
