Close’s sensual production “Beam Me Up” has proven its remixability, bouncing from the hands of Scuba to George Fitzgerald to Hercules and Love Affair, but of the three house heavyweights, Andy Butler (at the helm of the Hercules project) truly made the track his own.

Fitzgerald and Mr. Rose certainly graced the original melody with their own sublime skills – especially Scuba since he contributed to the production from the get go – but Butler offers the most dramatic departure from the original. He darkens up what Fitzgerald made dancey, and adds acid where Scuba went for dub. He unpacks the vocals with masterful chopping about 3 minutes in, and those bell tones give it an eerie, gothic feel, in keeping with the idea that “life’s a nightmare, not a dream” – very sexy and kinda creepy at the same time.
