SMOG: Why American Dubstep is Dope

Yes the American dance music scene has it’s highs and lows. We all know what the rest of the world thinks about Good Ol ‘Merica. As must as you elitist, Ibiza-praising, tech-house-is-the-only-good-genre types think, no one can say a negative word about SMOG, 12th Planet, and the LA Underground crew. Any west coast raver will tell you, these guys started the bass movement in America and pioneered dubstep as we know it today.

John Dadzie (12th Planet), Danny Johnson (Media Contender), and Drew Best started the then-promoter in 2007 throwing underground events inspired by the scene of South London. Their original influence has not only motivated top artists internationally (like the wonder kid Skrillex), but has bred a dance scene in LA unmatched by most famed electronic epicenters. Hosting sold out weeklies while travelling the world is just every day life for 12th Planet.

One of the cornerstones of American dubstep.” — Mixmag (UK)

Dadzie and his crew took the UK steps started by Skream & Benga, fattened them up, ripe for commercial America to eat right up. Slinging heavy hits the Smog crew took the states by storm in early 2010. After gaining support from Radio 1, they went national playing shows from coast to coast. Though he runs with the best of them, anyone who as ever met John will tell you he may be the most friendly performer out there.

SMOG pretty much brought dubstep to the U.S. and to North America.” — Skrillex

Support from the top is what makes this industry so wildly successful. With guys like team SMOG open to help out any hard-working, great sounding producer, the American dance spectrum has no boundaries. Over the past year we have seen friends and local favorites shoot to stardom. Many of the US producers can base success on the framework that SMOG and friends set in place for bass centric music. Thanks SMOG, you taught America how to rage.
