Jokers of the Scene – Killing Jokes (Mickey Moonlight’s Joke)

As the title suggests, “Killing Jokes” isn’t what you’d listen to when you’re feeling silly and frivolous. This third installment of the song from Toronto duo Jokers of the Scene is another dreamy exploration full of surprises amid an expansive and light-hearted reinterpretation from Mickey Moonlight of Ed Banger Records.

Each version of “Killing Jokes” offers a soundscape for brooding and pondering the universe. “Mickey Moonlight’s Joke” begins with grounded drum beats, then uplifts through atmospheric, experimental techno with nature-infused sounds of chirping birds and vivacious female laughter, while a deep, wobbly voice teases in repetition: “let me tell you a joke.”

It’s an unexpected, up-tempo juxtaposition when you listen to the cinematic, cerebral parts I and II from the Jokers’ J0T5 EP, released on Fool’s Gold Records earlier this year.

Irish techno duo Psycatron took a powerful stab at a part III remix as well, with their rich, dark " target="_blank">Inflyte remix.
