Artful Dodger – Please Don’t Turn Me On feat. Lifford (Disclosure Remix)

Latch

Blogs have been painting Disclosure as the future of garage for a long time now. With this remix, the London duo frame that artwork and hang it on the wall for all to see.

Artful Dodger’s original track is a classic example of the R&B-tinged sound that brought garage to the mainstream in the early 2000s. It’s only appropriate then, that the figureheads of garage’s current renaissance should remix the track and let audiences see exactly how the sound has changed.

I can’t say it’s been a bad change either. The brothers have added so much character to the vocals, giving the track a warm glow when combined with the mid-range synth chords that flow in and massage your shoulders as you dance. Of course there’s also a lot of percussion that combines in quite a complex way to give it that head-nodding garage bounce. The way they build up the track and then hold back the groove for one more beat than you expect is just ridiculously great too.

Really though, all these things have been done before in garage. It’s just that Disclosure have this special something that gives their sound an edge and immediately gets you moving. As long as they keep at it, maybe we shouldn’t try to crack the code.
