Shadow Child – Junk Department Podcast 08

Many producers and Djs have multiple aliases and personas to add a bit of mystery to their performance, and here’s one of the most elusive of the bunch. The artist we once knew as Dave Spoon (real name, Simon Neale) has taken on a new identity as Shadow Child, and with it, a freshened sound and style.

Shadow Child is also one of the most recent additions to Claude VonStroke’s Dirtybird family, and when you hear his Junk Department Podcast mix you’ll understand how perfectly he fits into the label’s aesthetic.

Simon Neale isn’t completely done with his Dave Spoon project, but he explains that a new challenge was necessary as he outgrew being Spoon:

“I just ran out of love for what’s turned out to be the big arena sound, and the EDM monster isn’t for me either in the studio or DJ booth…My roots are heavily in early 90’s Hardcore, Jungle and House. I’ve always dabbled this way in my Spoon productions too but this current sound is completely inspired by those things, and the more clued up crowds that want to party to something ironically fresh. The name reflects someone kind of born again in the shadow of EDM… deep!”

Download Shadow Child’s Junk Podcast, and check out his infamous “String Thing” release from back in March – chances are you’ve probably heard it dropped in a few sets here or there (including the Eats Everything Essential mix!). Read Junk’s full interview with Shadow Child here.
