James Zabiela Launching New Label: Born Electric

If you have been lucky enough to witness the magic that is James Zabiela performing before your eyes, you’ve seen the utter joy that he gets out of making music. He smiles all the way through a set, bouncing and jumping, blonde locks falling over his face, lifting his controller in the air and wildly stabbing at buttons. But that exuberance is also full of precision; like a mad scientist he seamlessly creates sounds you’ve never heard before.

It’s only natural that an artist of JZ’s caliber should also be the head of his own label, and come September his newest invention will burst into the industry to buzz and shock our systems as only a label project born by Zabiela could. He’s calling it Born Electric, and its launch pad will be none other than We Love… Space in Ibiza, JZ’s summer home base for over a decade.

After spending a whopping 3 months on his recent podcast mix for Resident Advisor, James calls the piece a preview for what to expect from the Born Electric banner:

“The mix is a snapshot of what you might hear on my forthcoming label…It’s been a long time coming but it’s finally becoming a reality now, we even have a logo! Also we’re doing some themed nights at Space for We Love Sundays, in which they’ve booked acts like Scuba, Modeselektor, Midland and George Fitzgerald.” (Space event listings included below).

The RA.319 Podcast displays his undeniabaly artful attention to detail, transporting you on an ethereal journey through melodic house and bass, with airy vocals and his signature sprinklings of pensive audio clips throughout.

He shared some insights with RA about his inspiration behind the mix: “It’s really a soundscape into my noodle box (brain). There are sound bites from all over the place to convey what I’m about, bits of films, interviews and other things that resonated with me at the time I was putting it together. The idea behind making mix tapes hasn’t changed since I was actually recording them onto tapes for my friends at school. It’s the ultimate means of expression channelled through other peoples’ music and in this case a bit of my own as well.”
