TechNO or Yes?

Are we suddenly seeing a resurgence of techno or has it been ever-present? Both electro and dub step (by the way, they’ll probably be called something else tomorrow) are inundating the commercial market at the moment which is undoubtedly concerning. The Afrojack-adoring punters have been causing havoc and many headaches for us all but that may change very soon (hopefully).

According to some, however, the traditional and/or authentic form of electronic music has always been prominent within the industry and producers have been turning many critics’ heads in recent times by releasing deep and percussive synthesiser-driven jams, heavily influenced by the original-techno-gangsters, which clearly suggests the potential for the genre to become a powerful force once again. Pioneered in the early eighties by artists such as the German powerhouse Kraftwerk, techno was considered an underground movement but eventually gained momentum later that decade, proving to be a huge phenomenon. From then on, techno was subject to mainstream success throughout the United States and Europe in the early nineties and then slowly spreading worldwide.

Ash Moses has been in and around the Sydney scene for yonks, currently making solid musical inroads (both spinning records plus expanding his label) and is one of many who are frothing on the current vibe. “Doof doof music to your folks, techno is one of those funny words that has a variety of meanings to different people” he says, “…the wonky workouts of greats like Ivan Smagghe, Andrew Weatherall and Trevor Jackson are a good example of the kind of druggy, forward thinking dance music that is developing a strong following in this city”. With his alter ego commonly known as Tunnel Signs, Ash is the part owner of Death Strobe Records (the label created in 2009 and home to artists such as Domeyko/Gonzalez and Midnight Savari) whilst also being highly involved in, and an active participant of the newly created Motorik. It’s a free “nomadic techno train of immense proportions” founded this year that’s dedicated to expose, promote and endorse the “sleazy bass lines” the scene has missed. The parties are frequented by part-founders Cosmonaut, Bang Gang acid dudes The Finger Prince, vinyl loving sweethearts Slow Blow, and The Kat plus playing host to several guests. Keep a close eye on Ash and his pals doin’ they’re thang; I guarantee they will massage your brain.

So cut the shit, get your ass back on (or don’t move if you were already on it) the bandwagon and GO DEEP.
